Equality and Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act 2010 requires us to publish information that demonstrates that we have due regard for the need to:

  •  Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  •  Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
  •  Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups. The Trust will take pro-active steps to advance equality of opportunity, foster good relations and eliminate discrimination or harassment across all the protected characteristics (age, race, gender re-assignment, disability, marriage and civil partnership, religion and belief, pregnancy and maternity, gender and sexual orientation) within the Trust and school community. The information provided here aims to demonstrate that we give careful consideration to equality issues in everything we do. "Due regard" ensures that we work towards eliminating discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act We will eliminate discrimination and other conduct prohibited by the Act by:

  •  Adoption of appropriate Equality Policy and objectives
  •  Implementation of a behaviour policy which ensures all children feel safe at school and which addresses prejudicial bullying
  • Reporting and monitoring all racial and prejudicial incidents
  • Regularly monitor the curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of our pupils and promotes respect for diversity and challenges negative stereotyping
  • Ensuring teaching is of the highest quality to ensure all pupils are given equal entitlement to success
  • Ensuring pupil progress is effectively tracked with interventions carefully planned wen necessary
  • Ensure all pupils have the opportunity to access extra curricular provision
  • Listening and monitoring the views and experiences of pupils and adults to evaluate the effectiveness of our work

We will advance equality of opportunity by:

  • Using information to identify underachieving groups or individuals and plan targeted intervention
  • Ensuring participation of parents/carers and pupils in school improvement
  • Listen to parents/carers and pupils

We will foster good relations by:

  • Ensuring the school is a positive member of the local community
  • Ensuring equality and diversity are embedded in the curriculum and in collective worship

Protected Characteristics

There are 9 protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010 and all schools should be able to demonstrate that no form of discrimination is tolerated and that pupils show respect for those who share the protected characteristics.

The 9 Protected Characteristics are:- Age- Religion or Belief (also referred to as Belief and Non-Belief)- Disability- Gender reassignment- Marriage and Civil Partnership- Pregnancy and Maternity- Race- Sex (Gender)- Sexual orientation

At Lewannick Community Primary School, rather than teaching all the protected characteristics in every year group, we ensure that our children are given opportunities to develop age-appropriate knowledge and understanding through a well-planned and delivered curriculum.
