Core Subjects – Phonics

Phonics at Lewannick Primary School

At Lewannick Primary School, we use Read Write Inc Phonics (RWI) to ensure your child receives the strongest possible foundation in their Literacy skills. Miss Wakley is our Read Write Inc lead teacher, so if you have any inquiries regarding RWI, please get in touch with her.

At Lewannick Primary, our aim is for all our children to develop into confident, fluent readers who foster a true enthusiasm for reading. Engaging in regular reading or being read to regularly provides children with the opportunity to explore a multitude of different worlds, equipping them with the necessary tools to become independent, lifelong learners.

We can achieve these goals together through:

  • Read Write Inc, a program aimed at aiding your child’s reading progress at school
  • Encouraging children to nurture a love for books by incorporating daily reading sessions, both at home and at school
  • Providing students with access to a wide array of books, available both in the school setting and within their homes.

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics program designed to support all children in achieving fluency and speed in reading, allowing them to focus on enhancing their comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling skills. Assessment by the RWI lead teacher determines grouping based on individual ability, with small group phonics lessons conducted daily by trained staff. Consistent expectations are maintained across varying skill levels, and progress checks and regrouping occur at the conclusion of each half term.

Children acquire sounds in the school setting to support their reading and writing skills. They then reinforce these abilities by engaging with ‘Book Bag Books’ at home, specifically tailored to reinforce learning and present challenges in an enjoyable and stimulating manner. This is what they look like:
