Launceston College Primary TAG Rugby Tournament 23/3/2016
Wednesday afternoon saw a reduced squad of 9 players from Years 3 to 6 represent Lewannick at the Launceston area tag rugby tournament – Thomas H, Oli B, Lewis D, Molly S-H, Toby W, Eddie C, Toby S-H, Charlie S and Amy G. With each of our 5 matches being 12 minutes long and back to back, the team knew they had a challenging afternoon ahead, however from the initial training warm up they concentrated and worked as a true team.
Team Lewannick won the first match against South Petherwin 7 – 0 and grew in confidence. The second match against Lifton was more difficult and Lewannick came back from being 3 tries behind to win 8 – 6. This was a real testament to their positive team spirit. Battle cries of ‘Ready, ready, ready’ could be heard as they lined up to defend and the opposition were at a loss when successive tries were being scored.
Match 3 was our toughest challenge against a well-drilled St. Stephens, who being mainly players from Year 6 were physically bigger and stronger. However the commitment from Team Lewannick shone through and the match ended in a 2 – 2 draw. Yvonne King from Launceston College complemented us on the quality of the rugby played.
Team Lewannick knew it was now game on and they needed to win the last two matches. Match 4 saw Lewannick outplay North Petherwin 8 – 2 and although tired the players went into the final match with smiles and enthusiasm. At this point, Tregadillett were fielding a reduced squad of just 6, so Lewannick agreed to loan a player (a role which was rotated) in order to allow as many of our players match time, with Lewannick winning 6 – 4.
Everyone was delighted and realised the final tournament result would be close. The team results were announced in reverse order and by third place we knew we had made it into the top two and had secured our place into the next round at St. Austell. Everyone was delighted. Then came the pause…. ‘In second place and runners up St. Stephens and the winners are Lewannick!’
Well done to all of the players. It was a pleasure to watch you play. Everyone showed some excellent rugby skills and a determination for the team to win. You all shone, however a special mention must go to Toby S-H who scored with the support of his team an impressive 14 tries.
And finally, our two very special members of Team Lewannick – Amy and Molly. Due to the tournament rules being that 2 girls must always play throughout each match, both Amy and Molly had to play in all of the matches. They knew that if either one of them did not play Lewannick would not be allowed to place in the tournament. With this in mind, both girls maintained a wonderful attitude and commitment and although tired, were integral to every match. This was an amazing performance by them both.
Lewannick have never won this trophy before, so this is a special win. But perhaps the most special thing that was apparent throughout the tournament was the way in which you all united as a team and added equal value whether in Year 6, 5, 4 or 3. Lots of you were chosen to be captain during the matches and you always led the way on and off the pitch with 3 cheers for the opposition, shaking hands with the other players and also saying thank you to the referees and officials. Well done!
