Lewannick very much believe that children should be at the centre of their learning and should have the overal say in what they would like to learn. This year, we have handed the topic choice over to the children. Just before the start of every new half term, the children will be asked ‘What would you like to learn about?’. The class teacher will then take their ideas into consideration and fit them around the curriculum. All topics will ensure that teachers are make reading, writing and maths is paramount.
Each topic is planned using the progression sheets below which show the skills the children will learn throughout their half term. The progression across the school will be monitored to make sure each year group is challenging their children.
This Autumn 2015 term we will be basing our learning on the subject of drawing, starting with self portraits!
Research has shown that children, who have continued parental involvement with reading at home, make quicker progress than those whose parents do not become involved.
It is important that your child reads aloud to you each evening, but as their confidence and understanding improves they should be encouraged to spend some time reading alone, possibly silently. As the books become longer they are not expected to read a whole book a night – it is not a race. However, it is obviously desirable to end at a meaningful place i.e. at the end of a story or chapter.
The main aim is to foster a love of reading in a supportive atmosphere.
Maths homework is sent home on Fridays – linked to work covered that week.
Once each half-term there will be a theme based piece.
Please make sure that your child always has a named kit in school. Cold weather extras are useful in the autumn and spring terms.
