We had a fantastic end to our Alice in Wonderland topic!!! We played lots of party games and then we had a Mad Hatters tea party! Thanks to all the parents for providing food for our party and for the most amazing Alice in Wonderland character costumes!

Year 2’s had their SATS tests this week! We would just like to say a massive well done to all of them! They really tried their best and all did fantastically. Well done Year 2!!
In discovery learning this week, we made little people out of playing cards. These were to represent the playing cards that were in the film of Alice in Wonderland. We had to manipulate, bend and twist pipe cleaners and make their faces out of coloured card! It was great fun!
On Wednesday afternoon, we had a really exciting time participating in a range of sports. First of all we did cheer-leading which the children really really enjoyed. Then for the second part of the afternoon, we did cricket. By the end of the day we were all really tired but had so much fun!
Welcome back! I hope everyone has had a lovely Easter and not eaten too many eggs!! For our ‘stunning starter’ we watched Alice in Wonderland and looked at all the different characters and settings within the film!
Today in Discovery Learning, it was all linked to Easter. With Miss Bowden, we painted using different materials, with Mrs Roseveare we made salt dough eggs, with Miss Donnelly we made Easter cards and with Mrs Maynard we made chocolate nests!! Yummy!
We built London!!! We were all split up into groups and were given a landmark of London that we had to make. We could use resources from around the school and outside. Lots of us went outside and collect sticks and rocks. Morgan’s group used the sticks to make the outline of Big Ben and used a paper plate to make the clock. By half 11 the hall had transformed into London! The children built Big Ben, The London Eye, Houses of Parliament, The Tower of London, The Shard and London Bridge.
This week we learnt about the Royal Family. We have been looking at the life of the Queen and asking ourselves what we would do if we were in charge of the country!! We had some really funny responses!! Harry said that ‘I would stay in bed all day in my fleecy pj’s and watch tv!”
It was fantastic to see so many parents at our assembly on Friday. The children had worked so hard on producing as assembly all about London. They even created a mime independently. Well done Hawks Class!!
On Monday, we were put into groups and had to act out the Great Fire of London. We had to do it as a mime and we were not allowed to talk but had to show the story through our bodies! It was great fun and the children produced some amazing pieces of drama! We might even put some in our assembly this Friday!
We have learnt so much about the Great Fire of London!!Ask us some questions at home and see if we can answer them! This week we have also learnt about ‘The Plague’ that happened in London in 1665. The children learnt about the symptoms of the plague and what the people of London did to stop it!! Yuk!!
This term our topic is ‘London’. To start out topic off we learnt about the Great Fire of London and spent the day building houses that would of been in the fire of London. At the end of the day, we went outside and lined up the houses and created Pudding Lane! Miss Bowden and Mrs Maynard then set fire to the houses to show how quickly a fire spreads!
We learnt about Valentine’s Day on Friday this week and learnt why we celebrate it and the things we do to celebrate it. We made heart mobiles, symmetrical hearts and hearts to hang on our doors. It was a very creative morning! I hope that everyone has a really restful half term and look forward to seeing you back to school next Monday.
Week 4- 23/01/2017
There was an absolute disaster in Hawks Class on Monday morning. Miss Bowden turned up to school to find that the classroom had turned into a crime scene! The window had been smashed and there was footprints and finger prints all around the room and worst of all our toy Millie had been stolen. Miss Bowden phoned PC Gary and PC Steve and together we had to help them solve the crime. We made a list of suspects and clues and had to piece together all the information!! By lunchtime, we had worked out that it was Mrs Maynard who had stolen our toy Millie and had destroyed our classroom. Miss Bowden did then tell us that it was a set up and she had done this to help us learn! We all had a fantastic morning and really enjoyed learning in this way!!
Week 3- 16/01/2017
On Tuesday afternoon, Hawks Class enjoyed a Yoga session with Caroline. We learnt how to breathe properly to calm and relax us! We all felt very sleepy afterwards!! We also learnt about Florence Nightingale and why she is famous.
Week 2- Spring term 09/01/2017
This week we have been learning the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’. We learnt new words such as ‘concocting’, ‘brazen’ and ‘devoured’. We used these words in our sentences when writing about the pesky seagulls! We also painted Mr Grinling’s lighthouse.
Week 1- Spring term-03/01/2017
We had a brilliant first day back as we had a visit from Fireman Gary. He spoke to us about his job and what he does in our local community. He told us how we can stay safe in our homes and what to do if we see a fire. Not only is fireman Gary a fireman, he is also a police man! So we got the chance to learn about the police force too! He brought his uniforms too and Miss Donnelly got to try on the fireman’s outfit!
On Monday, we were invited up the St Martin’s Church to ‘Experience Christmas’. The children rotated around 5 different stations. At each station, the children learnt a different part of the Christmas story. At the end of the morning, the children wrote something that would make their Christmas extra special and had to place it in a basket in front of Heather the vicar. The children learnt so much at the Church and were talking about it for the rest of the day.
Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and family that came to watch our Christmas performance in the Church. I was so proud of Hawks Class and their 12 days of Christmas, they sang and acted it so beautifully!
We have had a busy week this week. We have been to Church and practised our Xmas songs for our Xmas performance next week. Ask your child to sing the 12 days of Christmas to you!!
On Thursday, we had a PJ day. The children all got to put their PJ’s on and bring in a cuddly toy. We wrote about our toy and why it is important to us. The children shared their writing with others in the class. We also watched ‘Old Bear’ and compared our bears to really old bear. Chloe noticed that old bears have glass eyes whereas our bears have plastic eyes.
In discovery learning, we were exceptionally busy! One group was estimating and measuring bears using cubes and centimetres. The other groups were looking at nets and building a cubes which eventually turned into a snowman! We also coloured and cut out our own stars which we will make into a big class Christmas tree.
We had a great time this week at swimming! We were all split into our different groups and got to practise our front crawl and back stroke. Miss Bowden’s group tried really hard to put their face into the water and sit on the bottom of the learner pool! Everyone tried so hard and all the swimming teachers were impressed with the talent in Hawks Class.
Week 9- 07/11/16
We spoke about friendship this week. We all had a slip of paper and had to write words on it that would make a ‘good friend’. The children wrote words such as kind, caring, loving and friendly. We then attached the pieces of paper together and linked pairs of children together. The children then went out to play and had to try and keep the paper attached to each other. The children tried really hard not to break the paper chain that was between them!
This week we have been learning all about the 5th November. We learnt why we have Bonfire night and what Guy Fawkes tried to do to the Houses of Parliament!!! We have made firework pictures, rockets and we have wrote firework poems.
Week 7- 17/10/2016
Thank you to all the parents that came to watch our assembly! It was great to see so many parents and Grandparents attend this event. Lots of parents also came into the classroom to see the work that the children have been doing. The parents were also asked to write something that they are proud of their child for. It was great to see the response from parents! Well done to all the children in Hawks Class, we are all exceptionally proud of all your hard work this half term!

This week we have been learning about friendship and how to make different people have a ‘happy’ heart. We played a range of games with different people in the class. We learnt how to work together, share and take turns. In Discovery Learning, we learnt about primary and secondary colours. We mixed red, blue and yellow with each other and you can see what colours we found from the photos of our colour wheels below.
Week 5- 03/10/2016
This week we have been learning how to write instructions. We learnt how to use time connectives, imperative verbs and even used words like ‘carefully’ and ‘cautiously’. Miss Bowden made a cup of tea in the classroom and we had to write down instructions as she did it!!
Verity wrote ‘Eventually, pour the boiling water into the mug cautiously.’
We also wrote instructions for making jam sandwiches. The best bit was that we actually got the make them!! It was a very exciting morning and it showed that our instructions were great as we all had a sandwich to eat at the end of the lesson.
Week 4- 26/09/2016
We have been measuring in Maths this week. We have learnt how to measure with non standard and standard units of measure. We have been estimating length and then measuring it really accurately! In pairs the children had to measure their hand spans and different objects in the room.
In discovery learning this week, one group made salt dough. We carefully mixed flour, salt and water together and had to use adjectives to describe the texture. We then made little mice and leaves out of our salt dough.
Another group went on a ‘Woodland Walk’ and discovered different flowers and leaves. The children were able to say the different parts of the plant and what they need to grow best. We collected some leaves, sticks and flowers which we used to create a picture with.
It was a very noisy Monday afternoon in Hawks Class. We were discovering how instruments work and what they are made of. The children loved working out whether you have to hit, strum, blow, bang or pluck the instrument to hear the sound. Ask your child what their favourite instrument was and which was the loudest!! Miss Bowden’s ears were certainly ringing at the end of the day!!
On Thursday, we went for a walk around Lewannick. A Year 1 child was paired with a Year 2 child and they had to create a map of the features that we saw. The children visited the church, shop, park, village hall and Verity even spotted the War Memorial!! The pairs created the most amazing maps!
Week 2- 12/09/2016
We had a really exciting morning on Friday! The children enjoyed ‘Discovery Learning’ on Friday which saw the children participate in a range of different activities relating to our current story of ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’. All of the children got to make and taste porridge, write instructions for how to make porridge, weigh different amounts of porridge in grams and kilograms and draw a map for Poppy in chalk on the playground.

Topics will be changed every half term in Year 1 and 2. The children will discuss with Miss Bowden what they are interested in learning about. Miss Bowden will then plan a creative curriculum around the topic that the children choose. This half term, the children decided to learn about different fairy tales.
Summer Term 2-2017
Miss Bowden asked the children what they would like to learn about next half term. There were many different answers so we had to have a vote. The most popular topic that came out of the vote was digging. Some children were thinking digging at the beach or mines and others were thinking about digging up things. Miss Bowden and the children then thought of dinosaurs and finding out about the dinosaurs that used to roam the land. Below is what we will be learning about!
Summer Term 1- 2017
This half term our topic will be ‘Alice in Wonderland’!!! We have already got a display up in the classroom to engage and enthuse children. Already, children have been bringing in pictures they have drawn of Alice and the other characters. We will be studying the different characters and settings and making flowers as tall as us to see how Alice felt when the flowers were as tall as her in the film. We also will watch the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland.
Spring Term 2-2017
This half term our topic will be ‘London’. A lot of the children expressed an interest in finding out things about London and were excited to learn about the Royal family and the Great Fire of London. We will also be looking at the famous landmarks in London and compare London to Lewannick!
Spring Term 1-2017
This half term our topic will be ‘To the rescue!’. The children decided that they would like to learn about Policeman, Fireman and different people who help us within our community. We will look at how firemen and policemen’s equipment and uniform have changed over the years. In Science, we will be looking and naming the different teeth in our mouths and designing healthy food menus.
Autumn Term 2-2016
This half term our topic will be ‘Toys’ We will be learning about toys from the past and comparing them to toys of the present. We will create observational drawings of our own teddies that we bring in and we will look at how they move and what force is applied to them to make them move in a certain way.
Autumn Term 1-2016
This half term our topic will be ‘Once Upon A Time’. We will be reading different fairy tales and using them as a stimulus for our lessons. This half term we will also be learning the story of ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’ and by the end of the half term, we will be able to tell this whole story through actions! Keep an eye on our website for updates of our learning!

This Autumn 2015 term we will be basing our learning on the subject of drawing, starting with self portraits, and then moving onto Christmas and Special Times!
